I have so much to say about this which can best be summarized by snippets of this conversation that I just had with Genevieve:

Genevieve: It’s totally about his ex girlfriend being mean to him but whatever.

Me: Brad, we’ll be nice to you!!! We’ll call you on your landline and never break your heart!!!


Genevieve: It’s cleaned up a lot but it still sounds like him

Me: It’s not the sweep-you-off-your-feet kind of song that Away Frm U is but I think this more mature, more subtle. I think the last record was like an explosion of passion which worked because he is talented, but this seems more like he worked at it you know? It sounds more finished, and that’s not a bad thing.

Genevieve: Yes absolutely. It does seem a lot more considered on account of all the orchestration and stuff but I like how you said it seems mature, i didn’t think of that, it really does.


Me: it’s really brilliant, I just got to that awesome sample at the end. It’s haunting and sinister but still sincere and charming which is amazing.

Genevieve: I think haunting but also charming is brad’s M.O., come to think of it…and yeah it still feels really sincere. That’s what I like about his music, its sincerity.

Me: ooh, I love that you called it his M.O because his charm is definitely killing us.

 

Me: Yeah I mean the guy is writing about a bad breakup, it could come off as cloying or overdone but he is so sincere and it’s not reductive or rehashed it’s real. You know what he’s feeling, you can access it in many ways, but then at the same time it is elevated and untouchable because this sincerity is encased in his pure talent. I mean the guy is GOOD at music. I think HEART really shows that.

Notice how we try to have real opinions and talk about the music but we love Oberhofer too much to say anything objective or valuable for anyone who isn’t as obsessed as we are? Thankfully we’ve decided to spend the rest of our lives writing gushy reviews of all his work.
