This is a terrarium inside my mother’s house. Here’s Minus Momhattan on how to make a terrarium:

I have been making terrariums for years. A small effort brings so much clean green during our white winter. An added bonus if you’re a fresh flower lover like I am is you create your own small greenhouse - I had a white violet that bloomed for 5 months last year. I often use an old salad plate (check out vintage sales) and make a layer of marbles - small stones work well too. Then add a layer of fine charcoal (think fish tanks and water filtration systems) which act as a filter for bacteria. Then add small plants, utilizing the soil they came with and spreading this out taking care to protect the roots. Vary the height and foliage color for the most interesting result. Tuck bits of moss on top and around the edges and use a mister to water. Many times I’ll top mine with cloches but large open jars work well too.

Thanks Mom! Now you know how to make a terrarium.

My dearest darling, Estelle, get to work on your terrarium! Estelle got a gorgeous container for her terrarium maybe two birthdays ago now? It’s doing alright, but I know she had big plans for it.
I hadn’t ever seriously thought about it before I met her but now I think terrariums are just the neatest invention since sliced bread. I love the idea of using life to decorate and I am thinking giant terrarium chandelier with different sized glass fishbowl-like balls hanging from the ceiling above a window seat. Yummy!
Now I just need to hire someone to make it and take care of it.

Design for Living

Settled. Going to spend the rest of my life living only to read the latest posts on The Paris Review Blog. Another thing I know nothing about, Design, but such a well-written post.
Learn something new, it’s riveting, I swear!
Permalink Oooh, I like this a lot! New feature at board meetings?

Permalink Oooh. I really like this. I love the idea of bright, white, clean walls because it makes a space look expansive and fresh. Also, fuck accent walls, bring on the accent floors. Especially if you have slats of flooring like this. It’s probably the upkeep that will do you in with this. I challenge you to make this better though with white cowhide rugs and no red couch.

Why NOT paint your floors blue? source.
Permalink unf. What I miss about being home is flowers and plants. I’ve been really wanting to get some pretty flowers for my room for me to look at and remember that life exists when I am in here for the next twenty days writing papers about books I haven’t read.
